Prepare the photo

Use the full source frame for this example. Enable Pet photo detail · preview in Adjust image before mapping. The preview should still read clearly at thumbnail size.

2 · Compare

Start at 80 × 96 stitches

Choose Detailed size (96 on the long edge), request 24 colours and use Photo detail first. Check the eye boundaries, nose and ears against the original.

3 · Confirm

Clean only if useful

Preview confetti cleanup, inspect the changed-cell count, then apply or cancel. Print the symbol chart at 100% and test one shaded area.

Decision rule

Keep the smallest grid and colour count where the important feature remains recognisable. Increase complexity only when it fixes a specific lost edge or shade—not because a larger number sounds more detailed.

Output and selection record

The fixed output uses the full source frame and Pet photo detail, 80 × 96 stitches,14-count fabric and 24 approximate screen colours. Compare the facial shading, pale muzzle and blue eyes with the source; the PDF legend lists the same symbols and thread mapping. Verify substitutions against a physical card. This exact chart passed the owner’s review of eye, nose and ear features; the detailed and optional cleanup versions were both acceptable. We retain the detailed chart here. That visual review does not verify physical stitching.
