How much cross-stitch fabric do you need?
Start with stitch counts or a target finished size. Calculate in inches or centimetres, allow a border, then carry your plan into Photo or Blank Mode. Calculations stay in your browser.
Calculated plan
100 columns × 140 rows
- Finished stitched design
- 7.143 × 10.000 in
- Minimum fabric cut
- 13.143 × 16.000 in
The border is extra fabric on each of the four sides; it does not add stitches. Round the fabric cut up when buying and allow for finishing and shrinkage.
Photo and Blank support 12–300 stitches per side. Photo Mode asks you to resolve a different image ratio before generating. Your Recent draft remains available to restore.
The formula
Finished inches = stitch count ÷ fabric count. Add your border twice—once for each side—to get the minimum fabric cut. For example, 100 stitches on 14-count Aida is 7.14 inches wide before adding a border.
Suggested stitches = target inches × fabric count, rounded to the nearest whole stitch (half rounds up). Divide centimetres by 2.54 first. The actual stitched size may differ by up to half a stitch per axis.
Three inches on each side is a common starting point for framing, but your finisher may request more. Measure and test fabric that may shrink.
